About the Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green field.

The arms are Argent two bunches of grapes Purpure leaved and stalked Vert and on a base wavy a sperm whale Sable emphasized Or, in chief a goshawk Proper holding an inescutcheon Azure charged with five discs Argent set in saltire. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "SÃO ROQUE DO PICO".
Meaning:
"São Roque do pico" means "St. Rochus of the peak", the latter for the municipality location; no hints of either in the arms, which refer to the local importance of wine and whaling and the local whaling museum. Green and silver waves refer to the sea.

Presentation of São Roque do Pico

São Roque do Pico municipality had 3629 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of five communes covering 144,31 km², taking up the central-northeastern portion of Peak Island (Pico). It is part of Azores Region (also a NUTS II and traditional province), former Horta District.
