Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, on central chief point a money bag Or, on central base point a belfry Argent masoned Sable with bell, in flanches two braids Argent of broom. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "URZELINA - S. MATEUS".
Meaning:
The money bag is an attribute of St. Matthew, the local patron saint. The belfry is a representation of the local parish church, which had been damaged during an eruption of a local volcano in 1808 and refurbished in 1822. The braids are a species of fungus (Latin: Roccella tinctoria / Portuguese: urzela). They are the base for the production of litmus and here canting elements.
