About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red field.

Coat of arms

Shield Or with base Vert, standing upon base a throughout aqueduct Sable, arched twice and masoned Argent, in central chief a scallop Gules. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "CASTELÕES - VILA NOVA DE FAMALICÃO".
Meaning:
The local aqueduct is important for the supply with water and for the local heritage. The green base is symbolizing the fertile soil beneath the aqueduct. The scallop is an attribute of St. James the Elder (of Compostela), the local patron saint, and is referring to the fact that the commune is crossed by the "Caminho de Santiago", currently one of Europe's most well-known roads of pilgrimage. Finally the golden colour is representing faith, nobility, force and fidelity.
