Presentation of DS

The Democratic Party of Slovenia (Demokratska stranka Slovenije or Demokrati Slovenije - DS), distinct from the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), is a minor centrist party. It was founded on 12 March 1994, the same day an earlier Democratic Party merged with the then-ruling Liberal Democracy of Slovenia; the newly-formed DS consisted of the faction opposing the merger. The "first" DS was founded on 13 Oct 1991, splitting from the Slovenian Democratic Union (Slovenska demokratična zveza), itself founded 11 Jan 1989.

The party won 5.01% of the vote and 6 seats in the 1992 parliamentary elections. Since the split, the party has steadily decreased in strength; the last election it actively contested in was the 1996 parliamentary one, in which it received 3,3% of the vote and zero seats. Since 2007 it has been part of a coalition with the Social Democrats.

Flag of DS

The party's flag (photo of a table flag) is white with the blue letters "DS" "melting" into a blue mass, arcing into an elliptical contrail to the right, under a yellow "fat" star. There are also two inscriptions, "Democrats of Slovenia" in the upper fly and "Democratic Party of Slovenia" larger in the lower - in each "Slovenia" is italicized. Given the party's lineage, its yellow star is likely unrelated to the Party of Democratic Renewal's, even though the DS has de-facto merged with the ZKS's sucessor, the SD.

Emblem of DS

The party's Statutes mention the emblem (but not the flag) in Article 3, as follows:

The official emblem of the party is the stylized abbreviation "DS" in blue and with a yellow star in the upper part of the emblem. The emblem and its use shall be further regulated by decision of the central committee.
