Ensign of His Majesty's Armed Forces

[Armed Forces Ensign (Tonga)] 1:2 image by Zoltan Horvath, 27 November 2024

The ensign of the His Majesty's Armed Forces is similar but with white field and its ratio is 1:2. It is used over military installations, but not used on ships. I haven’t found any evidence of using this flag on port side of ships [as previously reported on FOTW].

When I was there in 1991, the Scandinavian cross flag flew on Navy ships, the three-sword flag did not, but flew over an army camp.

Crampton 1989 mentions both flags, and calls the war flag the Armed Forces ensign.

On a news broadcast of celebrations for the King of Tonga's birthday last week, I saw a square, fringed version of this flag. My guess is that the naval and war *ensign* is rectangular, as shown above, but that the army uses a square flag as described here.

Tongan Royal Guard

The Tongan Royal Guard is a specialized military unit within the His Majesty's Armed Forces of Tonga. Their primary responsibility is to provide security to the King of Tonga, royal palaces, and during official events involving the royal family.

The flag of Tongan Royal Guard is square with blue field charged with royal crown flanked by olive branches. All borders are decorated with yellow olive branches.
