The Social Democratic People's Party (Sosyaldemokrat Halk Partisi - SHP) was founded on 24 May 2002 by Murat Karayalçın and his friends that left the Republican People's Party (CHP). Murat Karayalçın was Mayor of Ankara in the early 1990s. He was Deputy Prime Minister as the leader of Social Democratic Populist Party (Sosyaldemokrat Halkçı Parti - SHP) in the past. After the merger of the old SHP with the CHP, he continued his political life in CHP. Due to problems with the CHP leader Baykal, he resigned and founded this party.
