The flag of the US Army Third Chemical Brigade, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Despite the numbering, I don't believe there are any others, though there may have been at one time. See www.wood.army.mil/3chembde/default.htm for details.

The blue and gold are, if memory serves me right, the same shades as those of the American Chemical Society (http://www.acs.org). I shall send a copy of this to a friend who knows more ACS history than anyone else and get the full scoop.

At the Institute of Heraldry website www-perscom.army.mil/tagd/tioh/Branches/Chemical%20Corps.htm it says for the Chemical Corps:

"Branch Colors: Cobalt blue piped with golden yellow. Cobalt blue - 65011 cloth; 67122 yarn; PMS 281. Golden yellow - 65001 cloth; 67104 yarn; PMS 116. The colors were originally those of the American Chemical Society and were adopted by the Army in 1918."

I'm dubious about this flag. The 3rd Chemical Brigade is actually the school brigade of the Chemical School. I visited the referenced web site myself and noted that though the brigade does have an authorized distinctive unit insignia (unit crest), it does not have an authorized shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI)--its personnel wear the SSI of the Chemical School.

The US Army flag regulation does not make any provision for a numeral in lieu of an SSI on the organizational flags of separate brigades. (All separate brigades have their own SSI.) School brigades are supposed to have flags with a field in the primary branch color, a fringe in the secondary branch color and a canton of the colors and design of the school's authorized "device" (usually a coat of arms). See this page of my site, WAR FLAGS, for some examples. Perhaps a special exception was made for this brigade.

415th Chemical Brigade

Organizational Flag, 415th Chemical Brigade. The Chemical Corps branch colors are cobalt blue and golden yellow. The 415th is a recently activated U.S. Army Reserve unit; previously it was a group. It has units throughout the Midwest. Its missions are chemical recon, detection, defense and decontamination.
