Description of the flag

The Barbour County flag is a bright blue field with a yellow border. In the center is a double silhouette of the county map of dark-bright blue with black outlines. In the foreground are two crossed sabers, a miner's hardhat, two tress, and a covered bridge. On ether side of the county silhouette is the year "1843". at the top and bottom of the flag are two yellow banners. The top banner reads: "BARBOUR COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA" and the bottom banner reads: "FIRST LAND BATTLE OF CIVIL WAR".

The two sabers represent the two sides of the American Civil War, The Union and The Confederacy. The Miner's Hardhat represents the coal mining industry that was prevalent throughout the county. The trees represents the nature of the county. The covered bridge refers to the Philippi Covered Bridge. a historic wood covered bridge which is the oldest and the longest in West Virginia, and the only one on the United States Numbered Highway System. The date 1843 is when the county was officially founded. The bottom banner is about the Battle of Philippi, which was the first land battle of the Civil War.
