Polačaa is located in the hinterland of northern Dalmatia, behind the coastal town of Zadar, in the region known as Ravni Kotari. Its main settlement is one of the several places in Croatia bearing the name "Polačaa", and is therefore often written as Polača (Benkovac), referring to the bigger town of Benkovac, located some 10 km farther from the coast.
Polača was located right on the frontline in the Homeland War, actually forming the border with the Republic of Serbian Krajina, and suffered much devastation.

The symbols of Polača are described in Article 5 of the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Polača, adopted on 21 December 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published the same day in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije, No. 13. The symbols must have been adopted with some previous Decision which was not issued in any official gazette
The description is repeated in Statut Općine Polača (text), adopted on 13 August 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 10 September 2009 in the Municipality official gazette Službeni glasnik Općine Polača, No. 1.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is described as follows:
The flag is of a single colour, blue, with a ratio of length to width of 2:1, in accordance with the Law. In the middle of the flag, at the crossing point of the diagonals, is the coat of arms of the Municipality, printed on both sides and bordered yellow.

The coat of arms is described as follows:
In a triangular shield on a golden yellow field, a blue palace with opened doors.
The walls are slanted on each side of the massive tower, this probably referring to the remains of an old fortification (against the Turks?) in the area.

The ceremonial flag (TV images, HRT1, 23 November 1999) is a blue gonfanon, three-tailed, blue, richly golden embroidered, which the coat of arms.
