Overview

Limon Province adopted a flag Limon (first hoisted 21 July 1992). Curiously the governor of Limon (Mm. Florita Wing Ching Sandi) answered my request since she was a member of the jury that selected the design. Before that, two other designs were in use,  but they were unofficial.

Limon used unofficially two different flags before the adoption of the official one, according communication from Florita Wing Ching Sandi, alcaldesa Municipal de Limon, dated 24 August 1998. Mrs. Wing Ching was, before to be alcaldesa, member of the jury that selected the official provincial flag. Provincial flag was first hoisted 21 July 1992.

The flag of Limon is upside down as the white stripe should be up.

Limon: a sailing ship represents a maritime province, the key is a connection to the Roman Catholic church (see the Vatican flag, for example), and the tree would be a local crop - could it be banana?  The wreath is laurel (peace) and coffee.
Rob Raeside, 21 November 2000

The key in the coat of arms, represent the seaport entrance of the caribbean coast of Costa Rica as well as in the coat of arms of province of Puntarenas, the key represent the entrance of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
