In New York, as in a number of U.S. states, the standard state division of "county" is further subdivided (completely, unless cities or villages are created from them) into "towns." To keep these from being confused with the usual meaning of "town" (i.e., a large village), these are sometimes called "townships." The list below contains cities and towns/townships and villages.
