The Mahoning County flag was designed by Heather Heaven of Canfield, and introduced at the Canfield Fair in 1986. The flag has a blue design on a white field. It shows six aspects of life in the shape of a wheel or pie. The images are labeled Recreation, Industry, Agriculture, Culture, Education and Community. The hub of the design is a silhouette of the county. Mahoning County was established in 1846. Its name comes from the Mahoning River or from the Native American term, "Mahoning" meaning "at the [salt] lick."
