Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield parted per fess; above parted per pale, at dexter barry of three of Argent and Azure, at sinister barry of three of Azure and Argent; beneath Argent a tower Gules with upstairs Azure and cone roof Gules.
The upper half displays the arms of the Westerholt kin, having been commisionaires of the Counts of Oldenburg. They erected Swippenbergen Castle after 1234 and in 1250 the Wardenberg Chapel, dedicated to St. Mary. The chapel became an important place of pilgrimage in the 14th century and was name giver of the nearby village.
