There was originally a contest for a municipal coat of arms, but due to the perceived low quality of the submissions, the council commissioned the publicity firm Publicom from Culiacán. The coat of arms was adopted on 15 May 1985. The open book signifies the cultural knowledge collected through generations, ongoing. The three cacti leaves, one bearing prickly pear, represent the origin of the name, that is: "In the cactus place" or "Place of Prickly Pears". The field signifies agriculture, mostly known for sugarcane, found to the left; the water is for the Pacific Ocean the municipality borders and irrigation. The factory is for industry. The municipal name is arched over the top area.
