Palestinian Flag Variant With Heart

[Palestinian Flag Variant With Heart] image by Eugene Ipavec, 24 Jun 2010

An odd Palestinian flag or flag-like object showed up at the funerals of the Turkish Gaza-flotilla casualties in Istanbul in an Yahoo news photo (caption: "A stylized Palestinian flag altered to have a heart on it flies above the crowds attending the funeral of a victim of the Israeli naval commandos raid at the Beyazit mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, Friday June 4 2010.")
The heart apparently replaces the hoist triangle.

Turkish-Palestinian Solidarity Flag

[Turkish-Palestinian Solidarity Flag] image by Željko Heimer and Eugene Ipavec, 13 Jun 2009

About six months ago, Turkish PM Erdogan had a heated exchange with Israeli president Peres at the Davos summit over the then in-progress Gaza war. Erdogan left Davos in a huff immediately thereafter; CNN carried live footage of the PM arriving back home, where his plane was met on the tarmac by a cheering throng of supporters waving Turkish flags and a number of Palestinian flags with the Turkish star and crescent added to the hoist triangle.. From the looks of them, they weren't homemade.
Eugene Ipavec, 13 Jun 2009

Considering the origin of the four-color Pan-Arab flag, which was anti-Ottoman in its inception, this hybrid is interesting. But the crescent-and-star emblem symbolizes informally Islam as much as it symbolizes Turkey, to the extent of some actual flags using this same combination, like the Western Sahara flag.

Joint Palestine-Lebanon flag

[Joint Palestine-Lebanon flag] image located by William Garrison, 6 December 2023

A conjoined Palestine-Lebanon flag with the Arabic slogan: "We Are All With the Resistance" as seen in an Egyptian "Lawyer's Union" demonstration against Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon in 2006 and against U.S. support for Israel, in Cairo, Egypt; c. 5 August 2006. This "resistance" flag was touted to show Arab solidarity against Israel's then on-going July 2006 military activity in Lebanon and Israel's continued encasement of the Gaza Strip, even though Israel had evacuated all Israeli settlements from Gaza during September 2005. The apparent two-flag joint "resistance" association was that as Israel had evacuated ("been forced out of") Gaza, so Israel would soon be expelled from southern Lebanon (and the Arabs' hope: from Palestine, too). The flags were apparently distributed in Cairo by the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt.

We will pray in Jerusalem flag

[We will pray in Jerusalem flag] image located by William Garrison, 18 February 2024

A flag of Palestine with on its white middle stripe the black-letter Arabic slogan of "sawf nusaily fi alquds" or "We will pray in Jerusalem". As seen near the city of Maroun Al-Ras in southeastern Lebanon near the Israeli border; c. Feb. 2020. The implication here means that although Jerusalem is currently in Israel, this Palestinian flag promotes their dream of re-accessing some part of Jerusalem (if not all) for inclusion into some future Palestinian state. Muslims may pray today in Jerusalem (al-Quds) such as atop the Haram al-Sharif (Temple Mount), but the city is not currently under Islamic control.

Jerusalem Not For Sale

[Jerusalem Not For Sale flag] image located by William Garrison, 15 March 2024

[Jerusalem Not For Sale flag] image by António Martins-Tuválkin, 15 March 2024

A national flag of Palestine with on the middle white stripe the Arabic slogan "alquds laysat lilbaye" [alquds = Al-Quds = "The Holy" city = Jerusalem] or in English "Jerusalem Not For Sale", as seen atop an archway of the golden "Dome of the Rock" [Qubbat as-Sakhra] atop the Temple Mount" [Haram al-Sharif]; c. 29 April 2022. (credit: AMMAR AWAD/REUTERS).

The "Haram al-Sharif" is located in eastern Jerusalem, and it was controlled by the Muslim-oriented country of Jordan, until the Israeli military captured it during the June 1967 war. Although this area was later annexed/absorbed by Israel, nonetheless, ever since then Muslims desiring a future state of Palestine want this area to be returned to their control. Hence, their slogan: "Jerusalem Not For Sale" to Israel during final peace-settlement negotiations.

This flag is meant to hang vertically, from the hoist, text readable in this position, with the top (black stripe) at the right hand side of the viewer. This flag seems to be somewhat more oblong than the usual 1:2 ratio of unmodified Palestine flags, and the triangle seems to be squatter, but that could be due to a perspective distorsion on the photo. The three words "القدس ليست للبيع" ("alqds list llbiʕ") are set in black letters, each in a separate line, with wide vertical spaces.

From the River to the Sea ... Palestine Will Be Free

[Palestine Will Be Free flag] image located by William Garrison, 21 March 2024

The national flag of Palestine with the slogan of "FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA" on the middle white stripe and "PALESTINE WILL BE FREE" on the bottom green stripe, as seen in a New York City, NY street demonstration, c. Dec. 2023. The hoist side is on the left red-triangle side. (photo credit: Eduardo Munoz/Reuters). The overall slogan here expresses some Palestinians' desire that the future independent "State of Palestine" should extend from the Jordan River all the way westward to the Mediterranean Sea - this would mean the incorporation of all of Israel into the future Palestinian state.
