About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a plain yellow background. Flag and arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : II Série in 1946.10.24.

The arms are gules seven arrows or pointing downwards and tied argent and in chief a goshawk proper in flight holding an escutcheon azure charged with five plates set per saltire. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "PONTA DELGADA".
António Martins, 19 Dec 2006

The arms show the attributes of St. Sebastian (just like, e.g., colonial Mozambique), the municipal patron.
António Martins, 19 Dec 2006

The city of Ponta Delgada was born out of the village of São Sebastião, which nowadays constitutes the city’s core Freguesia (it is also known as Freguesia da Matriz, for that reason). That may explain why the city’s coat of arms displays the traditional St. Sebastian parafernalia.
Miguel de Faria e Castro, 06 Feb 2007

Version without the coat of arms

Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have armless variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.
Jorge Candeias, 18 Jul 1999
