The Confederação do Desporto de Portugal (CDP) was established on 13 January 1990 by numerous Portuguese sport associations due to Law 1/90 (Lei de Bases do Sistema Desportivo), which means "bases of sports law". The law replaced the former legal base, which had Portuguese sport bound by instructions of Portuguese authorities. Since then CDP had been the umbrella organisation of the various sports associations. The new organisation was inspired by the role model of equivalents in other European countries.
On 26 January the 1st management committee of the then "Aliança do Desporto Federado" (alliance of federated sport) had been elected. Together with its registration on 10 August 1993 the current name was adopted. Members of the board are elected for four years. In 2009 the organisation gained the status of a common public interest (Portuguese: utilidade pública)
The seat of the organisation is Algés.
